Get your South African Matric or Senior Certificate accepted internationally with an Umalusi Verification letter
Umalusi is the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training in South Africa. It is responsible for ensuring that the qualifications, such as the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or matric certificate, meet the required standards of education and training.
When you need to use your matric certificate overseas, you may be asked to provide verification of the certificate’s authenticity. The Umalusi verification process involves confirming that the matric certificate is genuine and that the qualifications listed on it are valid. This verification process is often required for purposes such as further studies, employment, or immigration in another country.
After Umalusi verification, the documents often need to apostilled by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) or if the country is not a member of the Hagie Convention they need to get a Certificate of Authentication from DIRCO and then be attested at the appropriate embassy to ensure they are accepted in the foreign country.
How To Apply For Umalusi Verification of your Matric or Senior Certificate
- Download the application form, complete it, sign, scan and email it to us at [email protected], along with certified copies of your senior certificate or matric certificate as well as certified copies of your ID or Passport. The certified copies must be less than 3 months old
- We will check the form and confirm receipt send you an invoice. Once we receive payment we will apply to Umalusi for the verification letter.

The Umalusi verification letter is for individuals who need a verification letter confirming their matric or senior certificate obtained in South Africa. People normally need this when emigrating or applying for a job overseas. Once the letter is issued and apostilled or legalised at DIRCO your senior certificate can be accepted overseas.
The verification letter is limited to a matric certificate and not degrees or tertiary qualifications or professional designations. These are the certificates than Umalusi can verify:
- Senior Certificate or Matric Certificate (Schools after 1992)
- National Senior Certificate (Schools after 2008/11)
- National Senior Certificate (Colleges – N3 subjects and two languages)
- National N3 certificate
- National Certificate (Vocational): (Levels 2, 3 and 4)
- General Education and Training Certificate (ABET Level 4)
- Subject Statements/Certificates and/or Learning Area certificates for the above qualifications
The verification letter includes a copy of the certified copy of the senior certificate that you supply to them. These will then be authenticated by DIRCO with a apostille or certificate of authentication and bound with a ribbon.
All Primary and Secondary School results (Grades 1 to 11) are authenticated by the Department of Basic Education (DBE), not by Umalusi.
